Violence and Health

 In our country especially among the middle class and the lower middle class people violence is most common. Due to stressful conditions people especially males are used to drink alcohol etc., and do physical as well as mental violence against women and children.

What is Violence?

Violence is the behavior involving force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Violence is not only abut hitting somebody, mental torture, sexual harassment and forcing anyone in any form is considered as violence. According to estimates, out of total almost 35 per cent of women globally experience violence in their lifetime. And, in India among every 10,000 women 26 per cent of women experience physical violence during their lifetime.


Types of Violence

   Violence is not only limited to the physical torture, mental torture and sexual harassment also comes under it. 

  • Physical Violence
Physical violence is the behavior of physical force, hitting, hurting, damaging or killing somebody. This is generally done by the males against females and children.

  • Mental and Emotional Violence
Mental or emotional violence is the behavior of mental or emotional torture against anybody. This types of violence doesn't consist of hurting or hitting the victim, but it is about forcing someone to do anything without his/her own will. Blackmailing is an example of such type of violence. This can be  done by either men or women, against anybody.

  • Sexual Violence
Sexual violence is the behavior of abusing or harassing anybody sexually or getting intimate forcefully. Rape is an example of such type of violence. This is generally done with the female, but can be done with the male too.

Effects of Violence on Health

  • Physical Violence
Physical violence not only hurt someone's body, but also has several different effects. Such as;

  1. Loss of confidence
  2. Lack of communication skills
  3. Victims are always afraid to talk
  4. Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases
  5. Premature death
  6. Post traumatic stress disorder
  7. Increased risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts
  • Mental Violence
  1. Increased risk of depression
  2. Traumatic stress disorder
  3. Nervous disorder
  4. Suicide
  5. Anxiety
  6. High blood pressure
  7. Aggressive nature
  • Sexual violence
  1. Victim attain abusive nature towards others
  2. Anxiety 
  3. Depression
  4. Increased risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts
  5. Fear 
  6. Lack of confidence
Above mentioned are different side effects of different types of violence.

How to deal with violence?

  • Don't allow anyone to do any type of violence against you
  • Take action immediately
  • Government has provided several helplines to stop violence, use them
  • Avoid company of  drug addicted people
  • Avoid stressful conditions
  • Avoid use of alcohol, drugs etc.
  • Think before, you react.
How to deal with effected people?

  • Look after them
  • Provide happy and loving atmosphere
  • Don't discuss stressful matters
  • Always cheer them up
  • Don't talk in demotivating manner.
